A Wartime Leader

Curtin Suite

Australia's 8th Prime Minister

Years in Power: 1941 – 1945

Place of Birth: Creswick, Victoria

Occupation Before Parliament: Labourer, Copyboy, Union Official, Editor

Political Party: Labor

Curtin became Prime Minister in September 1941 and immediately used his wartime powers to organise Australia for the conflict ahead.

He introduced controls over manpower, raw materials, pricing, wages and ration to ensure factories only produced essential items.

With the war situation worsening, Curtin decided on greater co-operation with the USA and worked closely with Douglas MacArthur – Commander of Allied Forces in the South-Western Pacific.

The Australian people under Curtin’s leadership became united in the war effort. An overwhelming victory was received by his government in the 1943 general election. Expanding industries saw Australia provide food, clothing and arms for allied forces in the Pacific area which lead to a Japanese retreat.

Exhausted by emotional strain and a heavy workload, Curtin died in office in 1945, only six weeks before World War 2 ended.
