Bruce came to be Prime Minister with the resignation of Hughes. Apart from Watson’s short term, Bruce was Australia’s youngest Prime Minister with the least parliamentary experience – just four years. He overhauled federal government administration and oversaw its transfer to the new capital of city of Canberra. Bruce was the Prime Minister in sitting when Hostel Number One (Hyatt Hotel Canberra) opened its doors in December 1924.
Bruce lead during a time when the nation was stable and advancing. Technology had come to Australia by way of motor and air transport, radio, stoves and refrigerators.
In 1927 Bruce established the loan Council to coordinate overseas borrowings. A Development and Migration Commission was set up as well as the beginning of the CSIRO.
Bruce fell from power by increasing penalties on striking workers and their unions. He withdrew the Commonwealth from the arbitration system. The election that followed his governments defeat on this matter saw a swing in Bruce’s own seat that swept the National Country Party from office.
