The Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed in 1901; Edmund Barton because Australia’s first Prime Minister. He was the member of the group of eminent lawyers who lead the movement towards federation of the Australian states.

Barton was the leader of the Federal Convention in Adelaide that evolved the draft Constitution which received Royal assent in 1900. His government set up an Australian Postal System, made laws on custom tarrifs and defence and naval agreements with the British Government.

Barton’s government restricted immigration and prohibited cane growers in North Queensland from importing Kanaka labourers to work on their estates.

In 1903 Barton resigned as Prime Minister and became the Senior Judge of the High Court, a position he held until the year of his death.
