A Forgotten Trade

The engine driver of the boiler room

By Graham Fleming

My grandfather, Bernhard Lyon (aka Bill) Moore, was the engine driver at the Hotel Canberra in its early days and during much of World War II. Hotel Canberra in its early days had a very large boiler that provided hot water and heating. He had emigrated from New Zealand and had settled in Canberra in its early days. He was part of the Stewart family from Scotland. He was related to Major-General William Stewart who was Lieutenant-Governor of NSW and who settled in Bathurst. I have a recollection of visiting the Hotel Canberra as a child. As an adult I have attended conferences, given talks at conferences and had meals at the Hotel Canberra. I still live on the family property where my grandfather lived. In the early days it was considered remote but now it is inner south. This is our 90th anniversary of the family living in Beltana Road, Pialligo.
